Star UK performance poet Catherine Brogan on how poetry has impacted her life…

Poetry has always been my way of dealing with a world I don’t fit in to, that I can’t understand or change. At primary school I was bullied for having very dodgy pink NHS glasses, non brand name trainers and being a know-it-all. My teachers really encouraged me to write and perform my poetry which gave me confidence. I always wanted to be on stage, as I’m tone deaf, poetry was my way of getting there. As a teenager I used poetry to tell the stories I couldn’t tell anyone else. It helped me deal with difficult issues in a constructive way. Poetry also helped me come to terms with my sexuality, it was an aspect of myself I didn’t feel comfortable with talking about, so I came out with poetry. Poetry has given me an amazing community of supportive people all over the world. Poetry is my church.
