Shake the Dust is a celebration of the power of poetry in education. Bringing spoken word into the classroom can dramatically change young people’s relationship to studying English and increase their confidence, literacy and creativity.
Open INSET sessions for Teachers and Educators
In the run up to Shake the Dust, Apples and Snakes ran a series of INSET training sessions, exploring how teachers and educators can use poetry and spoken word in the classroom. Renowned poetry slam facilitator Jacob Sam-La Rose led evening sessions specifically to develop confidence and skills in supporting young people’s learning and creative expression through performance poetry
Shake the Dust in Schools/Youth Groups
Shake the Dust workshop programmes are taking place in five schools and out-of-school settings in each region from February to June 2012 in the run up to a regional slam final. Participating schools have been selected by the partner venues and slam consultants in each region. Even if your school/youth group does not participate in the workshop programmes, you can still find ways involve your students by bringing them to watch a regional final event, arranging for them to interview poets and young people from a participating school/youth group or showing the project trailer in your class. If you would like to engage your students in the project in one of these ways, or have other ideas for involvement, we’d love to hear from you. Please send us a message.
